Significant Spaces

Locations have been very significant to the stories we’ve collected. To mention a few:

  • Worthing beach
  • A GPs office
  • A boarding school
  • A mountain in wales
  • The internet
  • Clapham Junction station
  • The front of a coach
  • A box

This writing activity is to think about spaces and places that feature strongly in your life or that are important to you.

These might be spaces or places from your past or from your present. They might be positive or negative. They might be real or fictional. They may be places you go to or spaces you carry within you.

A place could be a staircase in a terraced house or a view of the Downs in the rain from the inside of a car. A space could be the inside of a suitcase or an upstairs room in a bookshop where meetings are held.

It could be an empty page ready to be written on. You can define ‘place’ and ‘space’ in any way you want.

You can respond to these starting points:

  • as a piece of writing (prose, poetry, story, monologue)
  • as an audio recording (talk, spoken word, reading)
  • as a combination of both

Each piece of writing should be no longer than 5 mins when read out loud.

Each audio should be no longer than 5 minutes.

There is no minimum time limit.

If you end up writing something you’d like to share with the project please email it to projectmanager@newwritingsouth.com.
